"from gold coast with love"

It was just after Christmas and I was contemplating opening a cool Corona as I dangled my feet in the pool when the phone rang. My good friend Normie Rowe said "Mate, I'm watching this Tsunami disaster on TV and I feel we've got to do something to help these people. Can you pull a fund raising concert together?” So began one of the busiest and most rewarding weeks of our lives, culminating in a stellar concert that ended up raising over $400,000 with which Queensland Health bought badly needed medicines and shipped them on our behalf to Aceh.

Vanessa Amorosi interacts with the audience.

I formed a steering team which included Mick Ellison (owner of Mano’s on Tedder Ave), Patrick Tessier from Salefest Advertising (a good mate who was actually on the Gold Coast on holidays!), staging guru Rrrray McGuire, PR extraordinaire Judy Dean and of course, Normie. Calling in favours from far and wide, the vision began to take shape.

Thanks to the goodwill of the Royal Pines Resort and Tennis Australia we were given a venue – the undercover tennis courts with its entire temporary infrastructure including grandstand seating! The down side – it was all going to be pulled out on Monday the 10th. It had to be Sunday 9th January or not all!

Jacquie & Brooke in our office began ringing the performers – many of them at home as they and their managers were still on holidays. Jack Strom, Vanessa Amorosi’s manager was first cab of the rank. “Count us in – Vanessa wouldn’t miss it for anything!” Australian music legends Brian Cadd & Glenn Shorrock and top Queensland band Honey quickly followed. Top comedian Fred Lang jumped at the chance to warm up the audience. Normie rang - “Ty Noonan from George & Kevin Borich are in”. Then it was Jeff Chandler calling to say “Troy Cassar-Daley will be there”. Jacquie called our good mate Venetta Fields – her reply “Honey .. anything you want … you’ve got it!”

Host Andrew G was a great hit with concert goers.

We decided the show needed some of Australia’s brightest young stars and all thoughts went to the “Australian Idols”. Ricky Lee, a Gold Coast favourite and Courtney Murphy were our picks but we hit a snag. Due to contractual obligations they were not allowed to perform! Normie jumped on the phone and called top entertainment promoter Michael Chugg “Chuggie, we need these guys what can you do?” The necessary calls were made and before we knew it they too were on the bill. Finally who would compere? “Let’s get “Australia’s Bachelor of the Year” chirped up Brooke and the next day he too was “in”.

Sound, lights, stage, advertising, security, tickets, posters, photography, video,
t-shirts, food, a car to raffle. Not one person said no or charged us a cent and just like that – “From the Gold Coast with love” - we had a show!

A huge thanks to all the volunteers, sponsors, the Qld Government (they matched, dollar for dollar the money we made) our good friends in the entertainment business and my mates on the “team” who made this an event we are never likely to forget.

Ty Noonan.

looking at...richard scholes

You may have met Richard during pre dinner drinks or as part of our Casino evenings. His close up magic is sensational and when he works as “The Flim Flam Man” we defy anyone to find the Queen of Hearts during his Three Card Monte sessions. But there is more to Richard - “The Man behind the Mask”.
Originally from the Gold Coast, this magician and illusionist studied mime and mask making in London before returning to Oz and creating “The Magic of Mask & Mime” for the Jupiters Casino show. Appearing in 5 different productions.

Richard has won two prestigious Australian Mo Awards for “Best Variety Act” and has twice been named Queensland “Entertainer of the Year”. His international visual act has taken him to Taiwan, Japan, Indonesia, America, Malaysia, China and more.
Richard has plied his crafty art on 20 different cruise ships, on all continents (except Antarctica!).

Now he performs the “Magic of Mask, Mime & Shadow” choreographed to music including shadow work highlighting animals and famous people.

You will still see Richard’s close up magic at our events but watch out for the man behind the mask. There’s more than meets the eye!

colourful finish for paint place conference

The annual Paint Place conference – this year at the Marriott Hotel Gold Coast – brought a great finish to an unusually busy January and February period. This year the five day conference featured a host of themed dinners, fascinating guest speakers and sensational entertainment.

Highlights included the Dulux rock concert featuring the Eagles Experience, a great custom designed 'Wild Wild West' night at Movie World and a truly inspiring and amusing keynote address from Tony Christiansen. Tony lost both legs in an accident when he was only nine years old and what he has achieved with his life since then should make us all take a long look at ourselves.

Given only three hours - it was a challenge to transform the trade show conference area into a gala dinner for the last night but our team made it look easy and the result was a triumph. Created specially for Wattyl Paints, the “New Look Supper Club” was as elegant as it gets and saw the debut of our new giant Martini Glass table centrepieces slowly rotating on their mirrored bases.

The featured entertainer for the night was Tom Burlinson. Tom is currently starring in the smash hit musical “The Producers” but on this night he put on his Sinatra hat and with a live “big band” performed his world renowned tribute to ‘old blue eyes’. It was a fitting end to a great conference and as CEO Ron Dalman said “I don’t know how we can top this next year – but we will!”
